Problems arise when negative emotions linger due to excessive rumination or worry.

The good news is that emotional wellness is a skill that can be cultivated. Techniques such as meditation, cognitive therapy, and self-reflection have shown promise in fostering positivity. For example:

  • Compassion and kindness meditation can enhance social connections and activate health-promoting brain circuits.
  • Self-affirmation—reflecting on what matters most—can encourage healthier behaviors by engaging the brain’s reward pathways.

Dr. Emily Falk of the University of Pennsylvania found that self-affirmation before receiving health advice made participants more receptive to change. In her study, physically inactive individuals who practiced self-affirmation became significantly more active.
